                  STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO

ARTIST:      PAULA JEANINE BENNETT

The lineage of a place of creativity is a cherished thing, and is especially precious in a centennial year.  The Whisper Garden celebrated the founders of the Perry-Mansfield Arts Camp in a way that allowed both visitors and staff to make personal creative contributions through movement, speech and music.  A meditative and ethereal environment, the Whisper Garden enabled participants to move at their own pace along a marked path. Using the location of the garden outside of Cabeen, the first cabin on the camp, participants were able to address the memory of Portia Mansfield and Charlotte ("Kingo") Perry.  Signs assisted these reverences as contributors moved through the Whisper Garden.

These were the seven actions that defined the installation:
1.  SAY THEIR NAMES ("Portia, Kingo")
which occurred as participants entered the garden under the antler arch
2.  DANCE THREE CIRCLES
which occurred around a tree ringed with stones on the path
3.  WALK AHEAD DELIBERATELY
which occurred on the marked path
4.  STAND IN STILLNESS
which occurred at a small bridge on the path
5.  TELL THEM WHO YOU ARE
which occurred as the path continued
6.  OFFER A SOUND
which occurred at a sound station in the garden overlooking the mountains
7.  WHISPER TO THEM
which occurred at an outdoor stone hearth

Underscoring the experience was a multi-layered sound collage created by Paula Jeanine Bennett that played continuously in The Whisper Garden.  This music was derived from Paula Jeanine's musical score "Whisper to Me", composed for choreographer Antonio Brown's dance "Breezes Of Remembrance",  also created for the Perry-Mansfield Centennial.

GUEST BOOK ENTRIES:
"This is the sweet territory of silence."
"Stunning for the sight and the spirit."
